AITB-E Scout Sniper Challenge 2023

Mojave Repeater supported the Advanced Infantry Training Battalion’s Scout Sniper Challenge 2023 aboard Camp Lejeune, NC with a demonstration and integration of Silvus Technologies StreamCaster radios. AITB personnel employed the radios to extend the tactical network in support of their Scout Sniper Challenge 2023.

In demonstration, Mojave Repeater worked with knowledgeable AITB personnel to interconnect a AN/PRC-150 3GIP network and Silvus mesh through a bridge computer running WinTAK. This enabled the operator to broadcast Cursor-on-Target (CoT) messages to both the AN/PRC-150 and Silvus networks. An incremental improvement on this capability, would be to establish a network bridge or static routing between the network adapters to enable the computer to natively forward traffic between the two networks.

In support of execution, Mojave Repeater & AITB personnel integrated an AeroVironment Puma UAS video downlink into the Silvus network via ATAK and the UAS Tool plugin. This enabled ground units to view a live feed of the Puma’s i45 Mantis Multi-Sensor Imaging payload alongside a map of live CoT tracks. Hunter-Killer Teams utilized their TAK enabled End User Devices to track event participants via the real-time EO/IR feeds, plot suspected positions on the common tactical picture, and eliminate participants from the competition. While simultaneously transmitting network traffic, Silvus radios enabled a persistent voice network for exercise control and Hunter-Killer Teams to communicate.

The AeroVironment Puma hauled a Silvus StreamCaster 4200 radio through some creative integration in order to extend the mesh network through an airborne radio node. During a lost-link procedure, the Puma system crash landed through dense brush and vegetation. The system was recovered thanks to the Silvus radio, which enabled the recovery team to directionally find the asset via the network topology and link quality with the device. This entire process took only 40 minutes from the time the bird went down to the time it was launched again for follow-on tasking. During the entire 6-hour event, no battery changes were required for any radio in the network and it remained active for the duration.

It was an honor to work with the infantrymen of AITB. They are total professionals at their craft and I am so grateful that the unit was so skilled and willing to be creative in accomplishing their mission.
